The Coton de Tulear dog is a small hypoallergenic dog that adapts well to living in apartments. It is a merry animal who is devoted to he or her owner.

When searching for a dog to join you as a companion, one must be careful to choose a breed that matches your personality as well as your expectations. Due to the fact that many more people are now living in condominiums or apartments without yards, smaller dogs are becoming more practical. One breed to consider is the Coton de Tulear. It is a rare breed but one that is prided by everyone who owns a Coton because of their merry personality and loyal affection.

Breed Health

The breed originates from Madagascar in the French town of Tulear. The Coton de Tulear is a rare breed and thus, they are generally quite healthy. The lack of irresponsible breeders forcing inbreeding on the dogs has so far kept many health issues away however one should ask a breeder about health issues within in the lineage of the particular dog in question.

One health issue to note is that this breed is prone to having digestive problems if fed cheap or low quality food. Buying dog food free of the most common allergens such as corn, gluten (found in wheat), soy and dairy is a good start to riding the dog of such problems.

Appearance of the Coton de Tulear

As the breed’s name suggests, Cotons have very soft fur that is traditionally white but can also include patches of brown or black. This type of coat is hypoallergenic and as a result, requires brushing everyday to stop mats from building up. Though the fur is described as hypoallergenic, pet allergies can vary from the fur to the salvia in the dog so those allergic should caution when choosing any breed of dog.

Luckily, for those brushing the dog, they only weigh from about 9-13 lbs for males to 8-11 lbs for females. Cotons have triangular floppy ears and a short tail that curls up when they are interested. They are small but sturdy and wiry dogs. Despite having shorter legs, they are known for their extremely fast running capabilities which makes them a prime candidate for agility training.

Coton de Tulear Behavior

Cotons are known for exuding happiness and an amusing livelihood. They are especially curious and social dogs but are cautious in new situations. Shyness may be present as well but it can be overcome with training.

These dogs adore playing and are known for acting like puppies throughout their entire lives with their energy and merry personality. The breed will regularly sit by an owner when bored and let out a playful growl or bring a toy to encourage playtime. They are known as anti-depression dogs because of this trait to make theirs owners happy. Cotons are also fierce lovers of cuddling and often expect close attention throughout the day. They are most definitely a lap dog in this sense.

The breed tends to love dog toys and can amuse him or herself at times when an owner is busy. They should not however, be left alone on a regular basis for long periods of time. This is because Cotons become very attached their owners which is very helpful when training them as they are very eager to please! One should be aware that because they are an intelligent breed, Cotons have a mind of their own and do need an owner that is assertive but never angry or forceful.

Perhaps one of the greatest traits for owners to consider is that Cotons easily adapt to their owner’s lives. They will happily go on long hikes or stay inside and play. Cotons generally just enjoy being around their owners. Of course as with every breed, a short walk everyday is best but as Cotons are in the Bichon family, they enjoy running at full speed around the house and sometimes, seem to exercise themselves!

Careful consideration of your expectations is important before selecting a dog but the Coton de Tulear is a great choice for people living in apartments or for those who are living alone and want some more excitement and companionship in their lives.
